Tamaki Makaurau

The Tamaki Makaurau series focuses on architectural geometric shapes caused by not only physical structures, but also by light
and shadowing. These architectural geometric shapes are often represented alongside plant matter — creating juxtaposition. I chose to photograph only pastel coloured buildings, in order to remove the sense of harshness caused by the bold lines and shapes.
This series has been heavily in uenced by photographer Ward Roberts, who released a series called ‘Courts’ which demonstrates the grids and shapes in architecture, basketball courts and tennis courts. He also photographs soft, pastel structures in order to provoke a sense of tranquillity. Like Roberts, I focused on photographing the buildings dead straight, in order to create symmetry and balance.
